Sometimes you look all your life for what you've had and lost

Things I remember

The sound of the water was all around us. We lay naked on the river bank as we did everyday at that time. The sun was hot on our skin, eyes closed our minds were filled with the orange and red of the day. You stood and put your hand out to me, I took it and you helped pull me up to you. Facing each other we kissed our toes digging into the warm sand. As the birds sang in the trees we looked into each others eyes, the green and blue of the afternoon blurred around us . . .

The water spilled a little as we walked in the crowd. The buckets were getting heavy as the sun was setting. We hurried knowing that in a few minutes we could be together alone. As we entered the palace and set our buckets down the smell of incense filled the air. We smiled, took each others hands and walked quickly to our quarters. The room was filled with blue drapes and gold ornaments, being palace servants our quarters were much better than most, the king would have it no other way. We walked to our little pool removed our cloths and stepped into the cool water . . .

The wind blew hard as we walked together. Your hair flew around your head as we made our way to our cottage. We hurried inside, you helped me push the door closed, we stood and looked at each other and smiled. My hand reached for yours we turned walked to the hearth and enjoyed the last of the fire, amber coals warming us. I added some wood and we sat down. I ran my fingers threw your hair and moved it out of your face so I could see into your brown eyes. The fire grew brighter and lit the room dimly. The room had the scent of smoke and we sat and talked about the day we had enjoyed together. As the room grew warmer I took off your little green and brown wrap and laid it on the floor. We took each others hands, you looked at me and motioned your head toward our bed . . .

The horses were tired, we slid down from there backs and took the reins and started walking. The grass was soft beneath our feet. The smell of wildflowers filled the air. Looking at the mountains we could tell the snow would be receding soon. The sky was like blue and white marble, the wind was just a breeze making the grass seem like waves on the ocean. We come upon a small creek, we drank along with the horses. I took your hand and we laid down in the grass and looked up at the sky. The clouds formed shapes like a misty puzzle. I knew that our first child would be born in a few short weeks. I placed my hand on your belly and you put your hand on top of mine. We could feel the baby kick gently telling us she was alive and waiting for her first breath. I picked a orange flower and arranged it behind your ear, your hair covered it slightly. I could see the clouds pass in your dark brown eyes, we laughed and ran our fingers through the grass . . .

The rain was heavy making the room feel colder than it was, I placed my hand on your shoulder as we looked out the window. We know the soldiers would be gone soon giving us are chance to leave the town and make our way to hills just out of sight. I turned as I heard one of our children cough. We walked over to there bed and you pulled the blanket back up around there necks. We looked down on them sleeping and wondered just how long we would have to hide from the planes. I took your hand and kissed it. I looked at your hair in that pony tail you always wore and touched the silver band you used to hold it. A tear fell from your face and I could tell you missed our son that we had laid to rest just last year. My hand went to your chin and I moved your face to look at mine. Your blue eyes shined with tears . . .

As she pulled away in her car, I turned quickly as not to let her see the tears in my eyes. When she was out of sight I walked slowly into our now empty home. I found my way into the room I kept my computer and sat down. Wiping my eyes I loaded my favorite songs and turned the volume up loud. My mind wondered a few minutes thinking of the long drive ahead of her and how she had never done anything like this before. A pleasant feeling came over me, I thought about how no woman had ever drove so long just to spend a few days with me. We had only known each other for a few short weeks and I remembered the first few nights we talked, both of us clinging to every word appearing on the screen. The time is close I thought, looking into the future a few months, I could see her here sitting on my sofa her deep blue eyes staring into my soul. Two people making a new life with each other, willing to give up everything we have to be together . . .
